Chao Son studied for his Master of Architecture at Victoria University of Wellington. Being of Cambodian descent, his thesis focused on Phnom Pehn, investigating the relocation of Cambodian people during the genocide through to post-war urbanisation. His main objective was to determine how rural migrants can adapt to urban conditions while keeping their cultural identity and values. 

Chao Son’s thesis proposes a speculative design within a littoral zone that allows for dwellings, sustainable urban farming, and communal buildings that will assist rural migrants adjust to their contemporary urban environment. 

After completing his MArch(Prof) in early 2019, Chao Son spent time abroad, travelling in Europe and South-East Asia. Since joining DGSE’s Wellington studio mid-2021, Chao Son has been working on a range of commercial projects, from aged care villages to education and interior fit-outs. Chao Son is passionate about building for the environment with significance and sustainability in mind.
